This is a true story. The simple things are many times the most profound. So it was on this day, a day many years ago when I was worried, burdened – desperate – as I turned to God in prayer. I bowed, bent over by the very weight of the burdens I was carrying. As I prayed I imagined putting the burdens down before him, one by one. Soon there was an enormous mountain of burdens before me, imposing and intimidating.
Suddenly, in my imagination, I saw God’s huge hand scoop up my mountain of burdens. In His mighty hand that huge mountain looked like a very small dot – right in the center of His palm. “Is this all?” He asked gently. “Are these all your cares and worries?” I gulped, speechless. Then, with a chuckle He said, “I believe I can handle this. Trust me.”
Relief washed over me. I knew, really knew, for the first time that He heard my prayer and that everything was going to be alright. I didn’t know how, I didn’t know when, but that didn’t matter just then. I knelt again, this time in a prayer of thanks.
“Now, put a dot in your hand,” He said. With my pen I made a small dot in my palm. “Use this little reminder whenever you pray. It will help you remember two things: (1) how your problems look in My all powerful hand, and (2) that you have released them to me. I am your heavenly Father and I love you very much. Nothing is impossible for Me (Luke 1:27). I created the heavens and the earth; nothing is too difficult for me (Jer. 32:17).
Years have gone by since then, but I still pray and put a dot in my palm. It helps to keep things in perspective. HE knows. HE cares. Everything is going to be alright.
Got stress? Feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders today? God cares. Pray . . . and put a dot in your hand. It will remind you that you’ve released your cares into God’s mighty and loving hands.
Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your cares upon Him, for He cares for you. I Peter 5:6-7
